Amplify your voice with Facebook, Twitter and Request to Speak. Learn new skills in an “open laboratory” setting. Please read this description carefully to be sure this workshop is right for you.

Facebook and Twitter:  This workshop is for people already signed up on one or both of these platforms. Small group and/or 1:1 tutoring and coaching will follow short presentations by people telling how they use Facebook and Twitter. The goal is to assist beginners and active users. Please come if you have just signed up for Facebook or Twitter, but don’t know what to do next. Also come if you already use these platforms, but want new ideas for social activist use.

Request to Speak (RTS): This is a way to express opinions and make comments on pending Arizona legislation. We’ll describe the process and share ways of tracking bills and their progress. Bring some numbers for House or Senate bills that you are tracking. Please sign up for RTS using the White Hats method below.

Please bring your phones, laptops and tablets to the workshop. There is free Wi-Fi at Casa Community Center. If you’re not ready to sign on to these platforms, you’re welcome to come and learn, but please know the tutoring and coaching is for participants who are signed up.

How to Sign Up for Request to Speak (RTS): The White Hats, young activists in Phoenix, will sign us up. Send your name (as written on your voter registration) and email address to rtsaz2017@gmail.com. A volunteer will enter your name into one of the House or Senate kiosks. You’ll get email confirmation, a temporary password and further instructions. Our test case got a response within 24 hours.

If possible RSVP to this program to berriebrae@aol.com or planetjurs@mac.com. Please send other questions about the workshop as well and let them know how the RTS sign up went.

a4a ACTNOW for Feb 27

a4a local action THIS MORNING
From the a4a Education Action Group:
There is pending federal and state legislation that will diminish public education at all levels
1.  AZ HB 2394 will continue to expand the number of students who are eligible for Student Empowerment Scholarships in Arizona. Originally set up for disabled children this new version will allow parents to take tax money through vouchers that would go to public schools and put that money toward private school tuition. The common terminology for both of these bills is “School Choice”. The actual result is privatization of public education.
This State legislation is being heard by the AZ Legislative Education Committee at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 27. Contact these members by phone or fax starting at 9:00 am on Monday until 1:59 pm.  Oppose HB 2394.  Call these committee members NOW.

2.  HR 610, co-signed by AZ Congressman Franks, calls for distributing Federal funds by voucher, for elementary and secondary education to parents who choose to enroll their children in a private, religious or home school. The bill also repeals certain nutritional standards that currently require fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk in school meals.  Contact Congresswoman McSally (or your state’s Congressman) to oppose.

An “Attack on Free Speech and Assembly”
This one is personal!
SB 1142: This bill makes participating in, or helping organize a protest that turns into a riot, an offense that could lead to criminal racketeering charges, including significant jail time and seizure of assets.  An overt act isn’t needed to prove a conspiracy to riot.  If a rally results in a “riot” (including disturbing the peace or destruction of property) the planners can be charged.  Those who plan, sponsor or participate in a rally could be charged as if they were part of organized crime!
The Speaker of the House could kill the bill simply by not assigning it to a committee. Contact the Speaker of the AZ House, J. D. Mesnard and urge him NOT to assign SB1142 to a committee.  THIS WOULD KILL THE BILL.
