JOIN OUR MONSOON MICROBURST

LET’S SINK THE BETTER CARE 'WRECKCONCILIATION' ACT

If everybody in a4a calls Senator Flake and Senator McCain on the same day, we will help sink this dreadful bill, at least for this go-round. Delay is our friend.

Tuesday, June 27th, is that day.

First, contact Senator Flake’s and Senator McCain’s Health Care Staff in Washington, DC. Ask them to vote NO on the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) as made public on Thursday. Ask them to join Senator Heller (R-NV) to protest the harmful Medicaid policies. Ask them to join Senator Johnson (R-WI) to protest the lightning fast process.
After calling Washington, contact the Tucson offices to register your opinion.

Is your hair on fire yet?

After that, contact Governor Ducey to ask him to persuade the two Senators to vote NO. The BCRA will hurt hundreds of thousands of Arizonans who depend on Medicaid/AHCCCS and those who need the individual marketplaces strengthened, not sabotaged. It will undercut those who need the Ten Essential Health Benefits guaranteed in order to safeguard coverage for pre-existing conditions, opioid treatment and with no reinstatement of lifetime or annual coverage limits.

With all calls, identify yourself as a member of the Alliance4Action in Southern Arizona.

!ACT NOW!

PENDING SENATE HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION

The Senate health care bill may surface
June 26th and be voted on June 28th.
Our goal is to head this off, to delay any vote.

What We Need to Do NOW:  Contact Senators McCain and Flake’s Health Care Staff in Washington*.  Ask them to vote NO on the Senate Health Care Bill based on the Talking Points below.

*If you can’t get through, call the Tucson offices.

Senator Jeff Flake (R)
Helen Heiden, Legislative Assistant for Health
Sen. John McCain (R)
David Bennett, Legislative Assistant for Health
 TALKING POINTS
  •  The Process is Legislative Malpractice:  Object to a vote without committee hearings or expert testimony, and the specter of a last minute “substitute amendment” strategy.

  • • The Republican Health Care Plan is Deeply Unpopular: It’s not favored by any state. Public support for the AHCA in AZ is under a third of the population.

  • • Medicaid Expansion: Rolling back Medicaid expansion in Arizona will hurt over 400,00 adults and children over six.

  • • The Individual Marketplaces: More insurers and lower premiums in the marketplaces can be obtained with guaranteed cost-sharing reduction subsidies, re-insurance options, continuing premium subsidies and consideration of geographic variables.

  • • Real Coverage for Preexisting Conditions: This is not negotiable. Blanket statements about affordable coverage won’t satisfy us. The 10 Essential Health Benefits must be guaranteed federally to ensure equitable coverage. State waivers will allow the reintroduction of lifetime and annual coverage limits, literally causing death and bankruptcy as in pre-ACA days.

  • • Essential Health Benefits: Essential Health Benefits must be federally guaranteed to cover maternity, substance abuse (read opioids), dental, rehab and mental healthcare.

  • WHAT WILL WE DO?
  • • Use these Talking Points (or others that raise your blood pressure). Use one at a time for DAILY phone calls, Resistbots, emails and letters to the editor in the AZ Star, the GV News and your hometown papers.
  • (There is Resistbot guidance on the a4a website)
  •  If you know activists in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Tennessee, send them this material to adapt for their own Republican senators.
  • • Go to https://www.trumpcareten.org/daily/arizona on the Indivisible website to get Arizona specific daily (weekdays) scripts. Adapt them to your personal style and stories.
  • • Ask your doctors to take a public stand. Ask your professional or interest group organizations to ACT NOW, like this week.

Self-Care for Activists*

“This is not going to be an easy four years. . . (they) are going to be emotionally exhausting and deeply traumatic for all of us, but particularly to those dedicated to protecting the vulnerable and preserving democracy.” THAT’S YOU; THAT’S US.

We need to learn new strategies --or else burn out in the first six months.

1.  Don’t get used to Trump—Get away from him.
We don’t have to live in a constant state of anxiety and anger. When it gets to be too much, it’s okay to unplug for a bit.  Play with your dog; go to yoga; take a walk; binge watch Netflix; take a vacation.  And don’t feel guilty when you do. Spend a significant amount of time not thinking about Trump—he’ll still be there when you plug back in.

2.  Focus your energy on one or two issues.
You, individually, can’t show up to every march, write letters and make calls on every issue. AND, not every job has to be done by you—even if you are the best person for the job. This will not make you a bad activist or a weak person. As a group we will get the jobs done.

3. Make activism fun!
Humor does have a place in activism—be creative. Then go out for a drink or a meal after the rally or meeting. Socialize. Laugh, sing, chat on the phone.  If you are not enjoying yourself as an activist, make some new plans.

4. Take care of the basics . . .
•    Get enough sleep.  If this is the only thing you do for yourself, this should be it.
•    It’s okay to go to therapy—or talk to your friends.
•    Go to the doctor . . . and the dentist.
•    Exercise.
•    Spend time with friends and people who love you, doing fun stuff.
•    Get some alone-time:  read a book, watch a movie, get outside, take a walk.
•    Eat well—healthy, yes, but it can be delicious food that makes you happy.
•    Make your bed—and other small, normal things.
•    Call your grandchildren.

I BELIEVE I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE . . .

. . . and take care of myself.
